Some people are under the impression that print is a thing of the past, and yes the interweb has made an impact on the newspaper and magazine industry, but it will never completely go away. I probably just jinxed it. Anyway print much like web has many factors to deal with. What kind of paper and what kind of printer are probably the two biggest ones.
All in all print can be really fun and very challenging. The key is get to know your print vendor. He or she will be able to spot "trouble" colors a mile away and be able to help you produce a better product. Trust me, they want the final product to look good just as much as you do.
The great Paul Rand designed the December issue of the Direction magazine 1940. Rand is a graphic design god, and I can credit many of his writings and interviews as a great source of much of knowledge of graphic desgin.
